Call for applications: Post-doctoral fellowships in Islamic Heritage text editions (Anawati Chair Program) | Deadline: March 1ˢᵗ, 2024

The Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in partnership with the Institute for Arabic Manuscripts (IMA) is pleased to announce a call for applications for three post-doctoral fellowships in Islamic heritage (turath) as part of the new Anawati Chair program. The fellowship will focus on developing a critical edition of a previously un-published text in Islamic heritage related to themes of humanism and universalism in Islam.

Description

The fellowship will last for 18 months, at the end of which the fellow will submit the critical edition. The award also includes two research trips that will help the postdoctoral fellow consult the manuscripts needed to draft the critical edition. These trips could take place in international libraries such as those in Istanbul, London, Paris, Calcutta, etc. The researcher who receives the grant is required to benefit from the research resources of the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts.

The fellowship includes a 20-day per diem for each trip as well as 2,000 Euros total towards plane tickets. To the extent possible, the awardee will reside in Cairo during the fellowship and will benefit from the IMA’s resources.

  • Monthly stipend of EUR 800
  • Two round-trip plane tickets equivalent to EUR 2,000
  • Travel per diem allowance with a total value of EUR 2,000

During the award period

Postdoctoral fellows will be required to present the progress of their work three times to the Scientific Councils of IDEO and IMA, Within the joint activity of the two institutes, as part of IDEO seminars and Chair activities.

The postdoctoral research will be published and put online in the IMA collection.

Requirements

  • Holders of Ph.Ds.  in the humanities sciences or Islamic studies related to the critical publication of Arab heritage,o   Holds the nationality of one of the Arab countries.
